No matter how we feel about it, the digital transformation of our world is accelerating every day, and it turned out that the academic landscape is not immune to this change. While this extreme and sometimes overwhelming digitalization has its disadvantages, it has also opened many doors for us. Today we can promote our research findings in ways that were never possible before.
Some researchers, particularly those just starting their careers, often struggle with self-promotion because crafting a self-praising narrative can be challenging. However, it's important to remember that others, especially those working in the same scope, are genuinely interested in learning about your work.
Building your personal brand as a scholar becomes essential for building your network. Networking is a way to connect and exchange on different levels, speak out and hear in, take and give. I believe that the networking as a form of academic conversation, is the engine to preserve and develop knowledge and the shortest
(yet not the easiest) way to broadcast your values.
And after all - networking is just fun.
I am very proud that the International Sociological Association has trusted
me to lead their communication and media presence. In this role, I collaborate with social scientists from around the world, ranging from early-career researchers to pioneering scholars from the world’s top universities, up-and-coming institutions, research committees, journals and their editorial boards. While I feel privileged to lead communication initiatives for the ISA and ISA Publications (Journals: Current Sociology, International Sociology, Global Dialogue Magazine), this role fell on my shoulders with heavy responsibility, reflecting the global impact of the ISA.Thankfully, I was never alone in this journey, having the support of my senior colleagues. I value this support deeply and now I want to pay it forward.
That's why I'm offering you an open access to my E-Guidebook on media presence
for scholars. This Guidebook includes instructions on personal websites,
social media for researchers, supporting software, data safety, and more
fundamental concepts on building a scholar’s ‘personal brand', as well as
strategies for increasing citation and promoting profiles ethically, softly & sustainably. It is suitable for both early-stage and experienced researchers. To understand this Guidebook, you'll need at least basic (with great passion) or pre-intermediate technological proficiency. While it mainly targets social science professionals, scholars from other disciplines are also welcome to request it.
I believe in the concept of ‘Scholars Pay Scholars’ and sharing resources,
so this guidebook is completely free of charge; simply fill out the form below.
Please note that guidebooks are not sent automatically to your email,
instead I review requests and send them out manually once a semester.
I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Cecilia Delgado-Molina
(Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) who taught me a lot about development
of safe and ethical digital dimensions in media. And Kunta Ayubi, the art-director of this guidebook and graphic designer of all my projects since 2018.
